A pop music star with a touch of disco queen, Kylie Minogue was by some counts Europe's biggest-selling female pop musician of the 1990s. She appeared in the 1980's Australian soap opera Neighbors and parlayed that role into a recording career; her first hit was the 1987 remake of the Little Eva hit Locomotion. She went on to become a major pop presence on radio, TV, and magazine covers in Australia and Europe (though she has never been a major hit in America). Her albums have included Kylie (1988), Rhythm of Love (1990), Impossible Princess (1997), and Light Years (2000). Her 2000 hit single "Spinning Around" put her back at the top of the pop charts, and she had a cameo appearance as the Green Fairy in the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge (with Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman)
Kylie Minogue has admitted that she suffered from stress following her cancer diagnosis in 2005. Speaking to Attitude, the 'All The Lovers' star revealed that she was hit with anxiety fears before performing in front of crowds upon her return to the limelight.
She divulged: "After being ill, I just thought, 'Okay, I don't know whether it was the stress that made me ill or the illness made me that way'. I don't know - chicken or egg.
"I would just be in absolute states before performing and I think there's always been a little voice in my head from when I started out, 'She can't sing, she can't do this, she can't do that'." The star added: "I just don't stress about being on stage anymore. There could be combined reasons, maybe I've just reached my stride and I love that I've had to earn that. No-one can give it to you. You've just got to learn the hard way."
Kylie Minogue has said that she finds it difficult to deal with poor reviews from music critics. Minogue, whose latest record Aphrodite is number one in the UK album chart, admitted that she does not react well to a bad review but will always "come back" if there is demand from her fans. "It cuts like a knife if I read a bad review," Celebrity Mania quotes her as saying. "But in the end, how the album in received in the press won't make any difference to me - I'd still come back. "A few thousand people in a room sharing two or three hours together - when all the other stuff gets too complex to understand, that's a really good place to bring it back to." Minogue recently celebrated her chart success with a performance at London's G-A-Y club.
Her record Aphrodite took the place of US rapper Eminem whose album, Recovery, slipped to second place.
The record, which is her 11th studio album features dance track All The Lovers which is number nine in the singles chart.
The 12-track album sees her working with Madonna collaborator Stuart Price, who is executive producer. He is also among the songwriters, as well as Scissor Sisters star Jake Shears, Calvin Harris, Nerina Pallot and Tim Rice-Oxley from the band Keane.
A spokeswoman for the Official Charts Company said it is 22 years to the week since Minogue's number one debut album Kylie! The Album first entered the UK charts.
A delighted Minogue added: "I've been completely overwhelmed by the reaction to Aphrodite and to hear that the album has gone to number one is the most amazing news. I am ecstatic. "My hopes for this album were that people would be moved, that the songs could bring about emotion. The euphoric heart of this album has taken flight and the response has been nothing short of incredible.
"My thanks, as always, to the many talented and dedicated people with whom I work and the fans who have been so supportive all these years." The record is her fifth number one album in the UK. Enjoy Yourself topped the charts in 1989 and Fever made it to the peak of the official album charts in 2001. Her 1992 greatest hits package also made it to number one. Boyband JLS tonight topped the singles charts for the third time with their new single The Club Is Alive. The dancefloor pop tune shot straight to the number one spot following its release last week. Katy Perry and rapper Snoop Dogg were demoted to second spot after spending two weeks at number one with their hit California Gurls.
